Great antique and hard to find French boule ball with stunning patina.
This ball of boxwood, with its rusty nails, has really been taken in abundance.
If only she could tell what she has already experienced.
She has worn plenty of quirks and edges, lost nail heads and has gained so much in charm and authenticity. This is Shabby PUR!
The wooden bullets were replaced by the usual metal bullets from the 1920s and were only in use for about 70 years.
Age: maybe around 1890 / 1900
Pétanque / Boule is THE GAME of the French and there is no place where you do not see a few old men playing.
Background information about Boule, Pétanque:
In the narrower sense, the term "Boule" (from French la boule "the ball", "the ball") or Boule game only briefly for the ball sport "Boule Lyonnaise", the so-called "sports boule".
In Germany, however, "Boule" (as well as the word "Boccia") is colloquially used more as a collective name for all ball sports, as well as in this article. In addition to the already mentioned "Boule Lyonnaise", the ball sports also include the "Jeu Provençal" derived from it, its offshoot "Pétanque", the British "Bowls" and the Italian "Boccia" (also called "Raffa"). In addition to these five "official" ball sports, there are other regional sports or ball games that have similar rules, such. Boule-en-Bois, Boule-de-Fort, Boule-des-Berges and Boule bretonne.
With "Boule" many Germans connect but also by the French in public places discharged leisure ball game. The correct name for this is however "Pétanque". With around 600,000 license players in 76 (national) pétanque associations, it is the most widely used ball sport. (Source: Wikipedia)
